New Year's Day may be a nationally observed holiday in the U.S. with many closures and abbreviated hours, but for shopaholics, it’s a time to get out there as soon as the new year begins and grab some deals.

The national retailers that will open their doors to shoppers on Jan. 1 include Best Buy (NYSE:BBY), Target (NYSE:TGT) and Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT), all of which have modified store hours. And because it’s New Year’s Day, there will be sales galore.

Most malls, grocery stores and retail stores will also be open during regular business hours on Jan. 1, but verify with each business to be sure.

City, county, state and federal government offices; schools; financial markets; and post offices will be closed on Jan. 1, 2014. The stock markets will also close for the holiday. Public transportation in major cities will run on holiday schedules.

Stores, offices and transportation systems will resume normal hours on Thursday, Jan. 2, the first official business day of the new year.

Although banks and some small businesses will be closed on Wednesday, several stores will keep normal business hours on New Year's Day. Here's a list of some stores that will be open on Jan. 1. Be sure to check ahead to confirm the hours.
