KEY POINTS

  • More than 11,700 Magic Chef air fryer units are included in the recall
  • Customers may get a refund in the form of credit
  • No receipt is needed to get a credit, according to the company

Thousands of Magic Chef Air Fryers are being recalled because of possible fire and burn hazards. The issuance affects two model numbers.

The problem with the Magic Chef Air Fryers is that they may overheat, thus posing fire and burn hazards, according to the announcement on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website.

No injuries or incidents related to the issue have been reported, but everyone who has a recalled unit is being advised to stop using it "immediately." Instead, they should take a photo of the rating label and send it to the company, Newair, to find out how to disable their unit and get a refund.

"The credit amount will be $50 or the amount on the purchase receipt if higher," the company noted. "No receipt is needed to get the $50 credit."

The recall affects the Magic Chef Air Fryers in black (model number MCAF56DB) and white (MCAF56DW). They were sold online via Newair.com, Walmart.com, Target.com, Wayfair.com and Amazon.com from July 2018 until September 2020.

Customers may register for the recall here. Those with questions may also contact the company at 833-715-1021.

The rating label that customers will need to take a photo of is located at the bottom of the unit. Photos of how it looks are available on both the CPSC and company websites.

Air Fryer Safety

Air fryers have grown in popularity in recent years, particularly due to the touted benefits of using them when compared to traditional frying. But as with all home gadgets and appliances, there are some important safety tips to remember when using them.

Of course, one of the first things that one needs to do is to read the manual properly first. If there's something you don't understand in the manual, there's no harm in contacting the company to try and get a clear answer.

Unplugging the air fryer after use is a simple way to avoid accidental startups while making sure that it has enough space around it gives the appliance enough airflow and may prevent fire hazards. Make sure to place it on a stable and even surface so it won't fall over, and don't put anything on top of it as this may cause overheating.

Although air fryers seem to be the easy way to fry without too much of the fuss of traditional frying, it's still important to check the food every now and then to make sure that the food doesn't burn. And, of course, don't forget to use silicone gloves or oven-safe mitts to avoid burns.
