The 2021 NFL season is barely underway, but the first game of Week 2 could have serious implications for both teams involved. After the New York Giants visit the Washington Football Team on “Thursday Night Football,” one of the NFC East teams will be 0-2 and a long shot to make the playoffs.

The betting odds indicate Washington has a slight edge since they are playing at home. The Giants are either 3-point or 3.5-point underdogs, depending on the sportsbook.

NFL Network will broadcast Thursday’s game, which starts at 8:20 p.m. ET.

Washington clinched the 2020 NFC East title in the regular-season finale. Had Washington lost in Week 17, it would’ve been New York that represented the division in the postseason. Both teams finished last season with a losing record.

The Giants were in the playoff hunt in part because of their success against Washington. Not only did New York sweep the season series, but Daniel Jones is undefeated in his short career against the division rivals.

Jones has a 4-0 record against Washington. The third-year quarterback is 4-15 against every other opponent.

New York is 3-1 against the spread when Jones starts against Washington. The Football Team has covered the spread in just one of its last five home games against New York, according to OddsShark

Jones didn’t exactly put up big numbers in last year’s wins over Washington, throwing for 324 total yards and an 87.3 passer rating. He lost a key fumble in New York’s 27-13 Week 1 loss against the Denver Broncos, and he has more career fumbles than games played.

Giants tight end Evan Engram will miss his second straight game with a calf injury. Running back Saquon Barkley is listed as questionable but expected to play.

Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke gets the start at quarterback in place of the injured Ryan Fitzpatrick. The 28-year-old only has started one regular-season in his NFL career.

New York and Washington scored a combined 29 points in their season-opening defeats. The total has gone under in each of the Giants’ last eight games.

Thursday’s betting total can be found at either 40.5 or 41.
