Tim Tebow has officially signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, giving him a chance to return to the NFL. The former quarterback inked a one-year deal to compete for a roster spot as a tight end, according to ESPN.

This is only the start of Tebow’s attempt to play professional football again for the first time since the 2012 season. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available but the 33-year-old is not guaranteed to make the team.

“I want to thank the Jaguars for the opportunity to compete and earn the chance to be part of this team,” Tebow said in a statement. “I know it will be a challenge, but it is a challenge I embrace. I am dedicated to taking the direction of our coaching staff and learning from my teammates. I appreciate everyone's support as I embark on this new journey.”

First-year Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer coached Tebow at the Florida when he became one of the biggest college football stars in history. Tebow had trouble making it in the NFL, last playing only two regular-season games nine years ago.

Tebow played sparingly the season after the Denver Broncos picked him in the first round of the 2010 draft. Tebow went 7-4 as a starter in the 2011 season and led the Broncos to an improbable playoff win.

That was the last real playing time Tebow would get. Denver signed Peyton Manning and Tebow was traded to the New York Jets, where he backed up Mark Sanchez for a season and threw only eight passes.

Attempts to make the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles in the following years failed. Tebow last appeared in a preseason game when he suited up for Philadelphia in 2015.

Tebow moved on from football and turned to professional baseball. He played in the New York Mets' minor-league system from 2017-2019.

Tebow asked Meyer for a tryout in February, according to ESPN, and worked out multiple times for Jacksonville.

No. 1 overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence is expected to be Jacksonville’s starter. Gardner Minshew is second on the depth chart.
