  • Jose Mourinho was contracted with Spurs until 2023
  • Spurs are currently placed seventh in the league table
  • He has been sacked by three Premier League clubs now

Tottenham Hotspur sacked Jose Mourinho with immediate effect after over a season and a half in charge Monday.

Mourinho won’t be in charge of the Spurs’ League Cup final against Manchester City. Assistant coach Ryan Mason and Chris Powell, who is head of coaching at Tottenham’s academy, are expected to take over for the remainder of the season, according to an official release from the club.

"Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level, I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution," Spurs chief Daniel Levy was quoted, as saying, in the release.

Mourinho, who was appointed by Spurs as their manager following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino, had been in charge of the North London club since November 2019. Even though Mourinho’s contract was until the 2023 season, the Spurs have decided to part ways because of a disappointing second half of the 2020-21 Premier League season.

Spurs are currently placed seventh in the league table and are at risk of missing out on a place in the top four. Under Mourinho, Spurs recently won just one in their past six games, a run where the club was eliminated from the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb. Mourinho reportedly earned close to $17 million a year at Spurs but did not produce the desired results. In fact, he could not even match his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino, who was very popular with the fanbase having led Tottenham to regular high finishes in the Premier League and to the Champions League final in 2019.

The sacking of Mourinho has come less than 24 hours after Spurs had announced their participation in the controversial European Super League.
