KEY POINTS

  • Saul "Canelo" Alvarez was spotted during a training session along with Andy Ruiz Jr.
  • Alvarez appears to be teaching Ruiz some moves
  • The former heavyweight champion raves about his new trainer

Andy Ruiz Jr. seems to be taking some pointers from a world-class champion.

In a new training video clip, multi-division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was spotted demonstrating what appears to be an uppercut move in front of Ruiz.

Alvarez and Ruiz were speaking in Spanish, and it wasn’t clear what the pair was talking about. However, it has become apparent that the former was teaching his compatriot “how to knock out” Chris Arreola, his opponent in his upcoming fight on May 1.

Following his devastating rematch loss to Anthony Joshua, Ruiz teamed up with Alvarez’s long-time trainer Eddy Reynoso.

From day one, Reynoso set the record straight that he wants Ruiz’s dedication and full commitment, something the heavyweight boxer didn’t fail to give.

“Eddy [Reynoso] sees the potential that I have and he told me that I needed to be disciplined if I was going to work with him,” Ruiz told Ring News 24. "I don’t think I’ve ever been truly 100 percent dedicated until now. I’m surrounded by great champions like [Saul] Canelo Alvarez, Oscar Valdez and Ryan Garcia, who help motivate me and it’s a blessing to be learning from Eddy every single day.”

“Working with Eddy has helped change my mentality,” he added. “His mentality is that we can’t take anything for granted in this sport. We’ve been working on a lot of different things and I have the ability to do a lot of new things with Eddy.”

Apart from having a changed in mentality, Ruiz also managed to drastically lose excess weight with the help of Reynoso.

According to the 31-year-old, he feels like a rejuvenated man who can accomplish better things now that he is in great shape.

“You know what? I’ve always been overweight,” Ruiz said in a recent press conference ahead of his fight against Arreola. “And now that I’ve been dropping weight normally and in the right way – by eating right, not just wearing the sauna suit, starving yourself – because that’s what I used to do back in the day."

"But now that we’re eating the right things, we’re working on the right things, I feel amazing," he continued. "I can say this – I feel amazing. I could do better stuff that I couldn’t do before because of my big gut. I had chi-chis. I had t-ts that wouldn’t let me throw the right punches and all that. But, you know, now I’m more motivated, I’m more dedicated in this sport and, you know, the sky’s the limit.”
