World Breast Cancer Research Day, observed every year on Aug. 18, highlights the importance of finding a cure for the disease to create a "breast cancer-free world."

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2021, the Dr. Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research created World Breast Cancer Research Day to recognize the "life-changing" research works that aim to end the disease and to stress their importance beyond a single month.

"World Breast Cancer Research Day is an opportunity for us to amplify the importance of finding a cure for breast cancer," the organization noted. "Dr. Susan Love Foundation is hopeful that World Breast Cancer Research Day will be a pivotal day in history that will allow us to achieve a breast cancer-free world."

People can observe the day by offering donations to organizations that focus on breast cancer research, or perhaps ones that support the many people impacted by the disease. You can also opt to get checked for the disease.

According to the organization, 85% of breast cancers are in women who don't even have a family history of the disease. Men should also take this opportunity to get checked as they can also be impacted by it, with 2,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer expected to be diagnosed in men.

"One more breast cancer diagnosis is one too many," said Dr. Susan Love, founder of the organization. "We must be the generation that ends it once and for all."

By observing World Breast Cancer Research Day, we can show support to people affected by the disease.
