The Boston Red Sox are World Series champions following a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.

Boston scored two runs in the first inning through postseason hero Steve Pearce and would not surrender their lead as they went on to score a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to eventually win their ninth World Series title.

Pearce, who also scored a homer in the eighth inning, was later named World Series MVP.

"Baseball is a funny game," Pearce, a journeyman throughout his career, told Fox Sports afterward, as quoted on CNN. "The longer you stay in the game, great things can happen. I'm very blessed to be here right now."

It means the Red Sox have won a remarkable fourth World Series title since the turn of the century in what was their best-ever season, having accumulated a 108-54 regular season record as well as a 11-3 postseason record.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora, meanwhile, became the first Puerto Rican manager to take, as well as lead a team to the World Series.

"What a season," Cora said. "Everything starts with these guys. They're very talented. They bought into it from day one in spring training. They've been very consistent as far as preparation, going about their business. What a way to end it."

Here is how sports stars, politicians, fans and more all reacted on social media to the end of Game 5:
