KEY POINTS

  • The Goldberg vs. McIntyre showdown is seen as a desperate move by WWE
  • WWE creative team did not have a ready opponent for the WWE Champion
  • The Keith Lee angle may have lacked rapport to help WWE's TV ratings

WWE fans are still reeling from the sudden turn of events in the last episode of RAW.

Out of nowhere, Bill Goldberg emerged and confronted Drew McIntyre. From the onset, it was obvious what would follow next.

Though it has yet to be made official, the assumption is that Goldberg vs. McIntyre title clash will be booked for the 2021 edition of the WWE Royal Rumble.

For those following the WWE rumor mill, it would be a surprise.

However, Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio suggested that the Goldberg vs. McIntyre angle was made because the WWE creative team had nobody ready for the “Scottish Psychopath.”

Originally, it appeared that Keith Lee had the inside track to challenge McIntyre and ignite a new feud. But with the rating game in play, WWE may have opted to go in a different direction to jack up the numbers.

Goldberg remains a top draw, and the logical route to go was with the multiple-time WCW champion.

However, putting Goldberg against McIntyre shut the door on any potential Roman Reigns showdown.

Goldberg and Reigns were originally set to clash in a “Battle of Spears” at WrestleMania 36, but the "Tribal Chief" backed out due to health concerns.

Until recently, Goldberg reignited that blockbuster clash when he took a swipe at the reigning WWE Universal Champion.

Though this is not to take anything away from McIntyre, it does prove that the creative team failed to consider some things on the Red brand’s roster of talent. There are several big names in the locker room that deserves a big push.

Assuming the Goldberg vs. McIntyre title tilt officially gets booked for the 2021 Royal Rumble, it would not be surprising to see the 54-year-old coming out of it as champion.

At some point, McIntyre is expected to regain the title, the farthest date of which should be WrestleMania 37.

The move raises doubts although it could be a move to buy WWE Raw producers to figure out who to build on next.

Goldberg is someone who can add spice to any show, but it remains that other stars are being underutilized.
