KEY POINTS

  • Real Madrid cruised to win this season's La Liga championship
  • Karim Benzema was consistent throughout the year with a total of 21 goals
  • Despite Lionel Messi leading all scorers, Benzema was able to lead his team to the La Liga title

It comes to no surprise that Real Madrid emerged as the La Liga champions with how they’ve dominated on the field. Most of their success can be attributed to how Karim Benzema once again stepped up for Zinedine Zidane as one of the top players of the year besting even the likes of Lionel Messi.

With the games’ resumption after the coronavirus suspension, Los Blancos did not look back and easily took care of their competition. This was emphasized during their deciding win against Villarreal as they showed excellent passing, ball control and excellent cohesiveness as a squad. The defense of the Merengues was on point while Benzema once again sparked the offense.

The four-time Champions League winner showed to the world his elite capabilities by scoring in the 29th and 77th minute of the deciding match. It’s Real Madrid’s 34th La Liga championship and Benzema has emerged as the most valuable athlete for the Los Blancos.

Per The Real Champs, the four-time Champions League winner Benzema has had a better overall performance in this year's La Liga than Messi. While Messi emerged with more goals scored with 25, it’s been noted that 80% of these came against teams in the bottom 10. On the other hand, out of the 21 goals scored by Benzema, only 10 of those came against the bottom 10.

This, however, doesn’t take away anything from Messi’s amazing season. The 25 goals and 21 assists of Messi are phenomenal no matter what context. But Benzema’s impact has been more significant given how Real Madrid cruised to the top of the La Liga standings with 87 points. This was further emphasized with club president Florentino Perez claiming that Benzema should win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

“Benzema should win the Ballon d'Or, I have not seen another player have as good a year as him," Florentino said.

Given that Real Madrid reigns supreme over all of Spain, this makes Zidane one of the more successful coaches in the organization. The consistent performance of Benzema helped Zidane notch his 11th trophy for the club.

The cerebral and tactical approach of Zidane coupled with Benzema’s brilliance puts Los Blancos in a position to dominate in years to come. It will be interesting to see how Real Madrid will compete in the coming seasons with stars such as Benzema still playing on top of their game.
