Oscar-nominated film 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' will not be shown in India after Sony Pictures refused to compromise scenes depicting rape and sexual intercourse.

India's Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) wanted certain explicit scenes in the film to be blurred. Bare bottom and bare-breast scenes are not allowed in India, said J.P. Singh, an official at CBFC said.

We objected to several scenes in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and wanted them to be blurred, he added.

Sony Pictures will not be releasing 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' in India, read a statement from the company's Mumbai office.

The censor board has judged the film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form and, while we are committed to maintaining and protecting the vision of the director, we will, as always, respect the guidelines set by the board, the statement added.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, is based on the book of the same name by Swedish author Stieg Larsson about a journalist's search for a missing woman. The film, directed by David Fincher, was released in the U.K. and the U.S. last month and has won five Academy nominations.
