‘13 Reasons Why’
Clay Jensen’s (Dylan Minnette) and his classmates’ stories will continue in “13 Reasons Why” Season 2. Netflix

Netflix has just officially renewed “13 Reasons Why” for a second season.

Over a month after its release, “13 Reasons Why” sparked conversations among its viewers. Majority of the fans have urged the streaming site to release a second season so that Clay Jensen’s (Dylan Minnette) whereabouts after Hannah Baker’s (Katherine Langford) suicide can be told. Unfortunately, even though a second season has already been greenlit, there will be one major change in the series. Showrunner Diana Son will no longer return, and she will be replaced by Tony and Pulitzer prize winner Brian Yorkey, according to TV Line.

Netflix has also released an official synopsis for “13 Reasons Why,” which confirms that the upcoming episodes will also shed light on what happened to the other characters mentioned in Hannah’s tapes. More specifically, healing and recovery are the two main themes for Season 2. This is deemed necessary after several professionals claimed that Hannah’s gory suicide shouldn’t have been actually shown in the series.

According to Variety, some schools in Canada have banned “13 Reasons Why” because it contains graphic content. Heads at St. Vincent Elementary School in Edmonton, Alberta sent out an email to parents of sixth graders informing them that even talking about “13 Reasons Why” within the school premises isn’t allowed.

“The discussion that is unfolding at school is troubling. This series is rated Mature and the theme is the suicide of a high school student. This show includes graphic violence (rape) and gore, profanity, drugs/alcohol/smoking, and frightening/intense scenes. The purpose of this email is to provide you with this information. Please let your child know that discussion of ‘13 Reasons Why’ is not permitted at school due to the disturbing subject matter,” the letter read.

Meanwhile, “13 Reasons Why” executive producer Selena Gomez is more than excited to share the renewal news to her millions of social media followers. The “Hands to Myself” singer posted a short teaser from the upcoming second season. The chilling clip opens with a shot of Liberty High School. It is followed by a red car driving down the street. People are also walking outside of Crestmont and Hannah’s parents’ drug store. The teaser basically features some of the locations where major moments from Season 1 took place. In the end, the numbers 13 and 2 were also shown in a red and bold font. The number 13 hints at the number found in the title of the series and two refers to the upcoming season.

“13 Reasons Why” Season 2 will premiere on Netflix sometime next year. Just like the first season, there will be a total of 13 episodes for Season 2, and each one will be an hour long, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series is based on the book written by Jay Asher in 2007.

Previously, the author told Entertainment Weekly that he also wants to know what will happen to the characters following Hannah’s death. However, even if Season 2 has already been confirmed, Asher said that he won’t be writing a sequel to his book.
