Al Qaeda has announced Ayman al-Zawahiri to succeed Osama bin Laden since the downfall of the most notorious terrorist in history.

The news of the succession, which was long seen coming, became official Thursday via a website affiliated with the terrorist network.

The new leader comes from a respected Egyptian upper middle class family and has long been number Al Qaeda's number two.
