An Amtrak train hit and killed at least three people on an overpass in the city of Commerce on Monday night, according to authorities.

Commerce is about eight miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The accident occurred about 9 p.m. near the 6500 block of 26th Street.

According to the authorities, the conductor of the train saw three to four men on the bridge and tried to brake, but the efforts went in vain. It's not known why the men were on the overpass.

The train, which is reported to have carried more than 70 passengers, was heading to Union Station in Los Angeles from San Diego.

However, no passengers or crew members were hurt.
