After days of shelling, revolutionary fighters in Libya claim to have captured landmark buildings in Sirte, the hometown of Moammar Gadhafi.

It was not an easy task for the revolutionary fighters - they were facing stiff resistance from loyalists all the while.

National Transitional Council Chairman Mustafa Abdul Jalil said fighters had reached the centre of Sirte. They were holding off an assault on the main square to let civilians escape the chaotic fighting, he said.

Here are some of the dramatic pictures from the battlefield.
