Cupertino-based consumer electronics giant Apple Inc.’s App Store now has more than 100,000 applications for iPad users.

The number of application available at the App Store for iPad has shot up from 50,000 in 2010. The tablet took only 16 months to achieve the six figure mark. The list doesn’t even include the iPhone apps that also run on the tablet.

Apple, previously, held a contest to celebrate the 10 billionth download from the App Store. The App Store has also been brought to Mac where the users can upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, the Brothersoft reported.

Apple’s iPhone, earlier, took more than two years to achieve the six figure mark, and now it counts up to more than 400,000 apps.

Apple's closest competitor at the moment is the Android App Market which has nearly 220,000 apps ready for download as per June 30, 2011. Google, however, removes applications from the app market approximately once a quarter. The total number of available Android apps tends to go down at that time.

Apple’s app market also carries out the app downloading and transaction process smoothly as compared to Android market which has had numerous difficulties when downloading apps in the past.
