While the release of iOS 7.0.6 and iOS 6.1.6 would seem like a minor update to the casual user, the latest version of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS patches a huge SSL vulnerability that potentially exposed Mac OSX and iPhone, iPad Air and other iOS device users to hackers who could intercept and/or modify data in during a secure browsing session.

Users of the Evasi0n 7 jailbreak for iOS 7.0.x were initially told to hold off from updating to iOS 7.0.6, while the Evasi0n team checked to see if exploits used by the Evasi0n 7 jailbreak were patched as well.

For those that were intrepid enough to upgrade to iOS 7.0.6 despite the initial warnings, the Evad3rs team finally released an update to the Evasi0n jailbreak which works with iOS 7.0.6.

Those who decided to stay on iOS 7.0.5 and below to retain their jailbreak will have to use another method to patch the SSL vulnerability. If you’re not looking to go through the process of restoring your phone, updating, re-jailbreaking and re-installing apps and such, there’s fortunately another way to ensure your phone doesn’t continue to be exposed to the Apple SSL vulnerability.

iOS tweak and app developer Ryan Petrich released SSLPatch through Cydia, the app used on jailbroken iOS devices to download tweaks and mods from various iOS app repositories.

According to the app install notes, the SSLPatch developed by Petrich addresses the CVE-2014-1266 SSL vulnerability found on iOS devices running iOS 6.0 through 7.0.5.

For jailbreak users, applying the SSLPatch is a fairly simple task:

1. Launch Cydia app.
2. Select the search tab.
3. Type in SSLPatch and select SSLPatch from the list of results and then press “install.”
4. Press “Reboot Device” to complete installation. Your iOS device should perform a restart shortly after.

For Apple iOS device users that are using a non-jailbroken device. It is highly advised to update to iOS 7.0.6 as soon as possible.
