Server maker SeaMicro, Inc.has unveiled its new x 86 energy-efficient server -- the SM10000-64, that features the latest 64-bit Intel Atom N570 dual-core processors.
The SM10000-64, which SeaMicro claims is the world's most energy efficient 64-bit x86 server, helps reducing power and space by more than 75 percent without requiring any software modifications.
"Optimized for 64-bit Internet data center environments, the SM10000-64 delivers more compute per unit power and more compute per unit space than any x86 system ever built," the company said in a statement.
The server runs on Intel's Atom N570 dual-core chip. Intel Atom is the brand name for a line of ultra-low-voltage x86 and x86-64 chips from Intel, and used mainly in netbooks, nettops, and Mobile Internet devices (MIDs).
Atom N570 is a dual core Atom chip for netbooks and offers a low power consumption. The processor supports 64-bit operating systems, 4 gigabytes of operating system addressable memory per socket, has a clock speed of 1.66 GHz . Moreover, N570 is the first low power Atom chip to support virtualization.

"When used on a SeaMicro motherboard, and in conjunction with SeaMicro power management technology, the N570 uses, at peak utilization, less than one watt for each gigahertz of compute," SeaMicro said.
SeaMicro, founded in 2007, has priced its SM10000-64 server at $148,000 in the U.S.
California-based SeaMicro is backed by investors, including Khosla Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Crosslink Capital, has recently received the $9.3 million grant from Dept. of Energy, which SeaMicro says is the largest DOE grant given to a server company.
