Apple confirmed Monday that its hosting a special, invitation-only event for September 9, 2009, confirming rumors that have circulated for the past couple of weeks.

The now-official keynote will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific Time (1 p.m. Eastern).

The e-mail invitation, which was sent to media and analysts, showed the shadow of a person with an iPod dancing to music. The words, It's only rock and roll, but we like it, were printed over it. (See below)

The music-themed event in San Francisco will be held at 10 a.m. at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, which is next door to Moscone Center, where Apple's much-larger Worldwide Developers Conference takes place every June.

Apple has hosted a new product introduction of its iPods every September for the past few years. This year looks set to be the same.

Apple declined to offer any further information on the event.
