After the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions finished a close game, things got ugly for the up-and-coming teams.

Jim Harbaugh, the new 49ers head coach, and Lions' head coach Jim Schwartz met for a post-game hand shake, and Harbaugh appeared to be over-zealous in the way he greeted him.

Obviously excited by the 49ers 25-19 road victory, Harbaugh raced over to Schwartz with a great deal of energy, and lifted his shirt to expose his belly for what was probably meant for a chest bump. Harbaugh extended his hand to Schwartz, and then slapped him on the back with his other hand, and then hooted as he jogged away.

Schwartz was not happy with this gesture, and claimed he heard an expletive. Schwartz then went after Harbaugh, and then players and security got involved, trying to play peacemaker.

I went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way, Schwartz said, according to ESPN. I didn't expect an obscenity at that point. Obviously, when you win a game like that, you are excited, but there is a protocol that goes with this league.

Harbaugh, who had a running fued with Pete Carroll when the two were coaching in the Pac-10, is known for getting overly excited, and for being an ungracious winner.

When asked about the confrontation, Harbaugh was glib.

That's totally on me, he said. I shook his hand too hard.

Harbaugh also said that if his excited personality offends you or anybody else, then so be it.

Both the Lions and 49ers are 5-1 on the season, exceeding pre-season expectations.
