One of the reasons fashionistas love watching the Oscars red carpet is, of course, to see the designer threads; another reason is to spot the top trends amongst Hollywood's elite.

There were many evident trends of the night, which give us a hint of what will be most popular for the upcoming season.

One trend was strapless. This was a bold move for the Oscars red carpet, noted E! News' Fashion Police correspondent Kelly Osbourne. Typically actresses steer clear of strapless at such highly-viewed events just in case a wardrobe malfunction is to occur. But on Sunday night the ladies were quick to bare their shoulders and necks.

Fishtail skirts and fitted bodices made the starlets extra sexy on the Oscars red carpet. Fishtails are decidedly glamorous, marrying a classic silhouette with modern sex appeal. The fitted bodices hugged leading ladies like Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Chastain in all the right places.

Finally, in terms of palette, crimson, winter white and metallics ruled the red carpet. Color is one of the most popular topics the Monday after Oscar Sunday. Here are three ways you can wear the hottest colors from the red carpet.

Crimson

Red was a huge hue for Fall 2011 and seems to be shifting that popularity straight into Spring 2012. Shades of crimson were seen on actresses Emma Stone, Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Janet McTeer. Red is a great way to update your look, especially for those women who have a staple black and navy wardrobe.

Red jeans are a must-have for spring. Get them skinny in a deep shade to pair with black blazers and motorcycle boots. A printed dress in crimson shade will add sultry sophistication to any ensemble. Finally, red accessories like a scarf or jacket will add a pop of color to even the most understated of looks.

Remember - red lipstick is always a classic beauty move. The Tom Ford Lip Color in Cherry Lush (Bergdorf Goodman, $48) is must-have dramatic shade.

Winter White

Who says you cannot wear white after Labor Day? Throw those rules to the wayside, fashionistas. Sunday night proved that winter white is sexy as ever. Gwyneth Paltrow, Milla Jovovich and Rooney Mara wore the stark shade to a T.

If you want to wear white for the remaining cold months, here is how. Fashion maven Lauren Conrad offering up some tips on her official Web site for this trend. Contrast your basics with a white sweater and leather pants. Go boho with a long white maxi skirt, black fur vest and ankle booties. You can even make a bold statement with white-on-white. Try a white sweater with white jeans and black boots. Totally chic.

Metallics

Metallics are certainly not for the faint of heart; but they are not just for rock stars either. No one wear s metallic quite like Jennifer Lopez. The stunning diva has worn metallics on multiple awards show red carpets, including the Grammys and the Golden Globes. She opted for a silver metallic Zuhair Murad gown for the 2012 Oscars.

For the daytime, keep it simple. Add just a hint of metallics for work or out to brunch. A metallic tank top under a black blazer or a beige dress paired with a metallic handbag will look great. For evening, go bold! Michael Kors' Sequined Deep-Pocket Pants (michaelkors.com, $225) are gorgeous with black stilettos. All-over sequins on a dress, like the Silver Samantha Sequins Dress from French Connection (usa.frenchconnection.com, $298) is perfect for a night out.
