New York University School of Law has purchased an Upper West Side condo at 845 West End Avenue for $3.6 million, according to city records filed Thursday.

The school will use the apartment for faculty, who will rent the unit, according to Michael Orey, spokesman for NYU Law.

Most of the units we purchase are quite close to the law school, but occasionally we purchase elsewhere in the city, as well, Orey wrote in an email.

The apartment has a central gallery, a kitchen with stainless steel refrigerator, limestone countertops and wood cabinets, according to the listing. The four bedrooms have ensuite baths with Calacatta gold and marble, as well as radiant heat floors. It had an asking price of $3.75 million.

Mark Samsky, Iva Spitzer and Elizabeth Unger of the Corcoran Group were the listing brokers.

The seller was an affiliate of Atlas Capital Group, which renovated 845 West End Avenue with Sterling American Properties. The building was built in 1930, and the developers relaunched sales in 2010.

The songwriter Judy Collins formerly resided in the building.

Atlas and Sterling hired architects Cetra/Ruddy, who are perhaps best known for their work on One Madison Park, the troubled new development where the Related Companies is pursuing a takeover.

Last year, NYU Law School bought a $3.5 million condo at 166 Perry Street, adjacent to Richard Meier's two Perry Street towers, and about a mile from the school's location south of Washington Square Park.

NYU is one of the largest landlords in the city, with holdings in Greenwich Village, Union Square and a medical campus on Manhattan's east side. The school is seeking to build four new buildings on the south side of its Washington Square campus, but is facing heated opposition from local residents and preservation groups.
