Madonna has finally spoken up about the controversial photograph of her 15-year-old daughter smoking a cigarette.

On the Today Show, the 53-year-old singer told Harry Smith that she wasn't happy about the photographs. Every day is a negotiation, but cigarette smoking I'm not fond of on anyone, let alone my daughter, she said in the exclusive interview.

Madonna talked about the challenges of being a single mother with four children. To be a single mother of four and to work as much as I do, with my life in a kind of metaphorical fish bowl, it's pretty challenging. But so far I've survived with sanity and humor intact, she said.

The Queen of pop admits that she is not as tough as she should be. She says she poses typical questions like, have you done your homework? And Why are you wearing that? but believes she needs to be tougher.

During the interview, Smith makes a reference to a recent music video where Madonna is filmed smoking, but Madonna confirms that she doesn't smoke. I don't smoke. That's just an accessory, Harry. There's a difference. (Lourdes) smoked that cigarette before I did that video, she said.

Fragrance

Meanwhile, Madonna is working with Lourdes to follow up her women's fragrance with a men's scent. The mother and daughter already have a clothing line together and now they are working on a fragrance project together.

I've always loved perfume; it's always been a big part of my life. But every time I tried to create the scent I was looking for, it never reached the stage where I thought it was good enough or I was told that the ingredients would be impossible to re-create in a mass way, Madonna told WWD Magazine.

We tested a lot of things over the past few years, and [Lourdes] has told me what she likes. She is a very opinionated young lady, and she likes this perfume, she added.
