This year's three-hour Olympics Opening Ceremony "will kick off with the sound of the largest harmonically tuned bell in Europe, produced by the Whitechapel Foundry, and the stadium will be transformed into the British countryside for opening scene 'Green and Pleasant', which includes real farmyard animals. The ceremony will also include a special sequence celebrating the best of Britain, featuring volunteer performers," according to the London Olympics website.

Though some football (soccer to Americans) matches have already been played, and there will be some archery on Friday prior to the London Games Opening Ceremony, Saturday is when the competition really begins, as the first full daily slate of sporting competitions will take place, with everything from volleyball and tennis to swimming and basketball kicking off all on the same day.

The first medals will also be awarded on Saturday, in athletics, cycling, fencing, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

Then it's more than two weeks of world-class sports, as every day up to and including Aug. 12 will feature a variety of events, culminating in the Closing Ceremony on Aug. 12.

The Summer Olympics are being broadcast exclusively on the full range of NBC channels in the U.S., while in England they will be shown on the BBC's various channels.
