'Bad Piggies,' The New Game From 'Angry Birds' Creator Rovio Entertainment, Finally Gets Launch Trailer, More Information On What Makes Piggies So Bad

The privately-held Finnish game developer Rovio Entertainment has secured a comfortable spot for itself on top of the freemium food chain with its legendary line of Angry Birds mobile apps, a series of mobile games that's been downloaded over 1 billion times and attracted merchandizing spin-offs as diverse gummy candy and real-life theme parks. Now after several sequels (the most recent propelling birds into orbit with Angry Birds: Space), Rovio is seeking greener pastures with Bad Piggies, a title that was announced earlier this month but until Monday offered few details about the prospective content. In a new trailer released today on Yahoo! Games, Rovio finally answered some of the discontented fowls' questions.

Bad Piggies is part vehicular racing and travel game, and part The Sims with its game of invention and experimentation. Players will build a series of mobile cars, planes, and anything in between and then transport the titular piggies through Rovio's iconic cartoonish landscapes.

After the initial reveal of Bad Piggies earlier this month, Mikael Hed, Rovio's CEO, said that he hoped the new game would give players an alternative perspective on the pigs from the notorious reputation they've developed as the primary villains of the Angry Birds series.

There's a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we've been constantly asked: what about the pigs' side of the story? Hed said. Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes.

Artistry and empathizing with farm animals aside, Bad Piggies is the first relatively unique or new IP to come from the Finnish developer in three years since Angry Birds first transformed mobile gaming and the video game industry at large. Given the relentless pace that struggling developers like Zynga Inc. (Nasdaq: ZNGA) push out new work (the company released six new titles last quarter alone, while posting a $22.8 million loss in profits), Rovio's unprecedented success focusing on a small number of unique titles shows a different - and perhaps more sustainable -- model for mobile software development in the future.

Bad Piggies will be released next week on September 27 for iOS, Android, PC, and Mac. Windows Phone, Windows 8 and PC versions to follow shortly.
