KEY POINTS

  • The Baltimore Ravens are undefeated in their black jersey, purple pants combination
  • They are also in the midst of clinching a playoff spot with some very complicated calculations
  • Head coach John Harbaugh is optimistic of Sammy Watkins' return to the franchise

The Baltimore Ravens' 2022 NFL season has been on shaky ground due to their shortcomings early in the season, but with a chance to lock up a playoff berth, the franchise is busting out a rare uniform combo that has never seen them be worn in a loss.

The Ravens' official Twitter account confirmed that they would be wearing their black jersey with purple pants ahead of their home game against the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2004, the black alternate uniform debuted to much fanfare as it fit the Ravens' identity of being a shutout defense–something that the franchise still takes pride in to this day.

Baltimore has only made such a pairing twice in their entire history and featured in their 2018 regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns to secure the AFC North title and 2021 Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts where they stormed back to a 31-25 victory after being down 25-3.

Celebrating their 16th year of existence this season, the Ravens have been a proven commodity in the postseason with two Super Bowl Championships to their name, though recent years have proven to be an issue.

Ahead of the 2021 season, the Ravens were forced to endure the season with a laundry list of key players on the injury reserve and faltered late in the season to finish the year with a record of 8-9.

They are much healthier this season however and are in the midst of a head-spinning 10-outcome scenario in order to clinch a playoff spot.

Such scenarios include:

  • Ravens win plus Miami Dolphins loss or tie plus New England Patriots loss or tie
  • Ravens win plus Dolphins loss or tie plus New York Jets loss or tie
  • Ravens tie plus Patriots loss plus Jets loss
  • Ravens tie plus Patriots loss plus Dolphins loss plus Los Angeles Chargers win
  • Patriots loss plus Jets loss plus Cleveland Browns loss or tie plus Las Vegas Raiders loss or tie plus Tennessee Titans loss or tie plus Chargers win

However, they will be without the services of wide receiver Devin Duvernay for the rest of the season after suffering a broken fifth metatarsal as revealed by head coach John Harbaugh.

Despite his loss though, Harbaugh and backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, who will again be starting in place of Lamar Jackson, is positive that the return of veteran receiver Sammy Watkins is a net positive.

"We're planning on playing him (Watkins). He looks great. There was some familiarity with the offense, and I'm really, really happy and excited to have him," Harbaugh told the media via the official transcript.

"It's great to have a veteran around, and again, it's great to have Sammy [Watkins] back in the building again, being a great mentor to us – our younger guys. It's just good to have Sammy back," Huntley later added.

With the calculations being extremely complicated and only certain to do so after this week, the Ravens picked up the victory against the Falcons is of utmost importance to better their chances down the line.
