A truck reportedly plowed through a Berlin Christmas market Monday, killing at least nine people and injuring many more, according to reports from German police. While an official motive was not immediately determined, police investigating the scene reportedly said there were signs the act was potentially related to terrorism.

The truck struck a market outside of the landmark Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, an area near the Berlin Zoo and close to several shopping centers in Western Berlin. Photos of the truck show a damaged windshield surrounded by more than a dozen rescue workers. Wooden stall tables were tipped over on the asphalt near where the truck had come to a stop in front of a temporary building set up for the Christmas market. Other photos and video showed the damage left behind by the truck, which had thrown boxes and crates around in its wake.

Reports initially indicated that just one person had died from the truck, but the number of casualties quickly climbed as responders were able to access the site and begin to clear the rubble.

Should the incident be confirmed as terrorism it would be at least the third high profile attack on European civilians in 2016 after the bombings in Brussels in March and the attack in Nice, France when a truck plowed down a popular promenade on Bastille Day in July. The Brussels attacks killed 32 people and injured another 300. Eighty-six people were killed during the Nice attack and another 434 people were injured then.

Germany has not seen a large-scale attack like those since earlier in the year and last year, when terrorists conducted organized attacks in Paris and killed 130 victims. Law enforcement officials have indicated that they were on high alert to respond to and stop terror attacks in Germany.
