Alongside major franchises like Candy Crush and Angry Birds , indie games have played a major part in popularizing apps and games on smartphones. Thanks to Apple, they’ll soon be getting prime real estate on Apple’s storefront. Apple will launch a dedicated section on the App Store Thursday that exclusively showcases games from indie developers, according to Polygon.

The permanent update comes after Apple’s current sale on indie titles. For the promotion, Apple offered discounts on titles including platformer VVVVVV and puzzler Prune . As with other App Store sections, indie games will be curated by Apple’s existing App Store editorial team.

Many developers have been strong supporters of Apple’s move. Untame president Itay Keren told GamesIndustry that Apple’s championing of indie titles is a clear upside for the industry.

"This window to independent work provides exposure to new artists, as well as to the art itself,” Keren said. “Mobile gaming has not really been synonymous with art, but the true innovation and creativity has come from the indies. So, by providing this ongoing exposure of these games to such a large audience, you're going to broaden the taste of gamers and possibly even transform the very definition of what mobile games are.”

Apple’s high-profile endorsement of indie games puts the company in line with other major app stores. Google’s Play Store has a similar Indie Corner section where it exclusively showcases games from indie developers. For mobile gamers and general users, the move is a nice touch and offers Apple the chance to highlight games from both major and indie developers.
