Hip-hop's elite gathered together on Sunday night in Los Angeles at The Shine Auditorium for the 2012 BET Awards, where Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce scored big.

Hosted by Samuel L. Jackson, the evening's celebrations began with West opening the show with 2 Chainz and Best New Artist winner Big Sean to perform Mercy. West also performed Theraflu as girlfriend Kim Kardashian sat front row. His performance gave way to Jackson and Spike Lee, who performed a parody version of Jay-Z and West's N----s in Paris.

Usher, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, Melanie Fiona, D'Angelo, Rick Ross and Chris Brown also performed at the BET Awards.

The awards show featured a tribute to the late Whitney Houston, where Monica and Brandy sang I'm Your Baby Tonight and I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston, sang Bridge Over Troubled Water and Chaka Khan performed I'm Every Woman.

In addition to The Throne scoring Best Group and Chris Brown and Beyonce getting Best Male and Female R&B Artists, Wale and Miguel won Best Collaboration and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Minaj also won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.

The biggest news of the night was the possible retirement of Chris Brown, who accepted his award for Best Male R&B Artist, adding that his album Fortune due out Tuesday will be his last.

I'd like to thank Team Breezy, everybody who worked on any one of my albums. My last album that's coming out in two days ... I just want to thank all my fans. It's dedicated to y'all. This one's for y'all; man, I appreciate everything.

Brown's rep cleared rumors, saying it wouldn't be the rapper's last night, just his latest. His rep was also busy debunking claims that Brown was arrested at the Shine Auditorium for weapons possession, supposedly to protect himself from Drake, who he quarreled with in a nightclub last month.

Nothing of the sort happened, the rep said and Drake was not present at the Awards show.

The red carpet was packed with celebrities from Trey Songz, Luke James, Tamar Braxton, Dawn Richard, Faith Evans, Marsha Ambrosius, Melanie Fiona, Elle Varner, Miguel and Jamie Foxx, who wore a Trayvon Martin T-shirt as a statement to the fallen Florida youth.

One best dressed of the night was Tatyana Ali of Fresh Prince of Bel Air fame, who donned a black and yellow ensemble complete with a peplum skirt. And speaking of Fresh Prince, Will Smith's children Willow and Jaden hit the red carpet for the celebration, sans their actor father and mother, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Other best dressed stars included Meagan Good, who wore a white V-neck gown, Monica in a purple tailored suit with sequined trousers and La La Vasquez, who donned a sequined jumpsuit.

The throwback of the night was Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank (TGT) who showed up on the red carpet to announce their R&B group will finally come to fruition this year, as the trio signed a deal with Atlantic Records with an album set to drop early next year.

R&B just got a face lift. We're going to remind ya'll why you fell in love with R&B music, Tyrese Gibson said on the BET Awards red carpet preshow. TGT is coming soon.

Michelle Williams and Letoya Luckett posed together for photos on the red carpet. Williams wore a nude and black lace bod-con dress while her Destiny's Child successor Luckett opted for a flowy, yellow cap sleeve gown.
