“The Blacklist: Redemption” revealed a new twist last episode: Scottie Hargrave (Famke Janssen) could be an imposter and may not be Tom Keen’s (Ryan Eggold) real mother.

In the finale episode of “The Blacklist” Season 3, it was revealed that Scottie was Tom’s mother, but the former wasn’t aware that her son is alive. However, when Tom infiltrated a Russian training camp in “The Blacklist: Redemption,” he found out that operatives were given plastic surgery to look exactly like their American targets. Tom’s father, Howard Hargrave (Terry O’Quinn), told him that Scottie could have been replaced by a Russian operative, since she began to act strangely after the disappearance of their son.

Eggold recently dished on this new twist during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he talked about Tom being torn between his mother and father.

“I think he’s caught in the middle and he doesn’t know what to believe,” he said when asked if Tom believes Scottie isn’t who she really is. “If he had to pick a side right now, it’s probably his father only because his father is the one giving him more information, and Scottie still apparently doesn’t even know that he’s her son, so they can’t even really have an honest conversation. That’s his dilemma is that he’s caught in the middle and he’s trying to figure out which one of these truths is the real one.”

The actor shared that Tom will do whatever it takes to find out the truth. But if it turns out that the Scottie he met is indeed a fake, he said Tom will likely feel heartbroken yet relieved.

“I think it would be heartbreaking,” he said of the possibility of Scottie being an imposter. “But it would also be a relief, to be honest, because then his mother is not some monstrous person with this plan to betray her country in some sort of nefarious attempt at whatever it is that they’re planning — or this double of hers is planning. It would almost be a relief that maybe there is good in her and maybe he can have a relationship with this woman. If she is that, then it would certainly clarify his feelings toward her.”

One thing that fans have been waiting for since the last season of “The Blacklist” is the moment Scottie figures out that Tom is her son. As the day approaches, Eggold said Tom is “freaked out” by the idea of the Halcyon leader discovering the truth.

“He’s definitely very nervous about it. He doesn’t know how to proceed. It would be so much easier if he could just confront it all, but having to remain in the shadows like this is hard. It’s taking its toll,” Eggold told the publication.

Part of that is because he believes Scottie will likely be furious if she realizes her son has been with her all along. When asked about Scottie’s possible reaction, Eggold said, “I think she would be pretty upset, pretty betrayed. Also, again, she would probably be relieved that her son is alive, he’s here, she’s found him. It’s a double-edged sword in that way.”

Meanwhile, “The Blacklist: Redemption” episode 4, titled “Operation Davenport,” will see Tom and the mercenary team taking on a new mission. “Ruthless terrorists escape from a black-site prison in Manhattan, so Tom and the team lock down the city and try to track them down. Meanwhile, Scottie unearths clues about her late husband that could expose Tom's identity,” read the synopsis, according to TV Guide.

“The Blacklist: Redemption” airs every Thursday at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
