Boeing is targeting 10,000 job cuts in 2009, or about 6 percent of its total workforce, according to the company's chief executive Jim McNerney.

He forecasts plane order cancellations and uncertainty over the U.S. defense budget, according to Reuters.

The 10,000 total includes 4,500 job cuts announced earlier this month

Boeing reported Wednesday a loss of $56 million in its net income in the fourth quarter citing a strike, certain charges and a litigation reserve.

Boeing shares have fallen about 45 percent in the past 12 months.
