“Bones” may be in its twelfth and final season, but the creator of the Fox series never wanted it to end.

Turns out that the decision to end the long-running crime procedural was taken by the network. “Bones” creator Hart Hanson told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour (via Entertainment Weekly), “It wasn’t our decision. We were told it was our last year. It wasn’t that we called the network and said, ‘We’d like to finish now.’ I’m not sure anybody is terribly upset or terribly shocked that it would be the last year.”

Series star Emily Deschanel, who plays Dr. Temperance Brennan, revealed that the cast and crew of “Bones” didn’t fight Fox’s cancellation decision. “It would be ungracious of us to be fighting against them canceling us, but yeah, it wasn’t our decision.”

So does this mean that a “Bones” revival may be on the cards in the future? “Those things are always possible and very desirable,” replied Hanson. Although the creator may be on board with the idea, Deschanel and her co-star David Boreanaz are less interested in bringing back their characters Brennan and Seeley Booth to life on TV again.

“It’s very hard for me to answer that question, honestly,” Boreanaz told reporters. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in six hours. I mean, you’re asking a hypothetical question, but everything is possible in life. But I tend to like to go forward. I don’t like to go backwards … In general, I don’t like reunions and I don’t like to go back.”

On the other hand, Deschanel would like some time off before she considers playing Brennan again. “It’ll be really weird to say goodbye, very emotional to say goodbye, until next week like, ‘Okay, coming back!’” Deschanel said. “Such an emotional roller coaster. That’s not to say I wouldn’t consider it in a certain amount of time, but I think we need to have some time pass before I consider it.”

“Bones” Season 12 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
