Former college freshman Brianna Brochu has been expelled from the University of Hartford after bragging about smearing a used tampon on her black roommate's belongings, among other atrocious acts. Brochu, 18, faces misdemeanor charges and could possibly be prosecuted for a hate crime.

“As of this morning, Brianna Brochu is no longer a student at the University of Hartford. She will not be returning to the institution,” Greg Woodward, the university’s president, said in a statement. “There has been an outpouring of concern for the victim of these acts from across the University and the country. In my meeting with her yesterday, I reiterated my personal commitment to ensuring she has all available personal and academic resources the University can provide.”

Brochu, a freshman at the Connecticut college, apparently did not get along with her roommate. According to her social media posts, Brochu waged a secret war to get Chennel Rowe to move out of the room. Brochu bragged about her secret sabotage on Instagram once Rowe finally left. Brochu, who is white, called Rowe, who is black, “Jamaican Barbie.”

“Finally did it yo girl got rid of her roommate!!" Brochu wrote. "After 1 1/2 month of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons [on] her backpack, putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn’t shine and so much more I can finally say goodbye Jamaican Barbie."

Brochu, of Harwinton, Connecticut, was arrested on Saturday but released without bail, according to the Hartford Courant. She was charged with two misdemeanors including second-degree breach of peace and third-degree criminal mischief Wednesday during her arraignment. Hartford police have also requested to add a charge of intimidation based on bigotry or bias.

Brochu admitted to smearing used tampons on her roommate’s bag and licking her utensils but denied some of the other actions she referenced on Instagram. She told police she wanted to appear “funny.” Brochu also told police that she “began to lash out due to a 'hostile environment' caused by [Rowe’s] rude behavior, not compromising, and posting Snapchat videos of me sleeping and making fun of me snoring.”

Rowe has criticized the school’s handling of the incident, alleging it took too long to investigate and accused the university of trying to keep her quiet. Rowe insinuated that her race played a factor in how it was handled.
