Burying the Ex

Ashley Greene may be done starring as Alice Cullen in the “Twilight” film series, but the actress is not done with roles that bring her up close and personal with the undead. In her new film, “Burying the Ex,” Greene ditches the vampires and werewolves for zombies in the horror comedy co-starring Anton Yelchin (“Star Trek”) and Alexandra Daddario (“True Detective”). A new trailer for the film, set for a June 19 release, reveals a rather unorthodox love triangle.

In “Burying the Ex,” Greene plays Evelyn, the needy, irrational girlfriend to Yelchin’s Max. Unbeknownst to Evelyn, Max is planning to break up with her, but before he can get the chance a hit-and-run leaves Evelyn dead. A stunned Max eventually moves on, but when he strikes up a new romance with the beautiful Olivia, played by Daddario, Evelyn returns from the grave – literally – to win her man back. The trailer teases a lot of laughs as Max contends with a very jealous ex-girlfriend zombie.

“Burying the Ex” comes on the heels of a wave of horror comedies seemingly parodying the zombie and vampire crazes of the past few years. “Only Lovers Left Alive,” starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, features a zombie romance and “What We Do in the Shadows,” released earlier this year, tells the story of a group of vampire housemates. Fans might find some – perhaps too many – similarities between “Burying the Ex” and “Life after Beth,” which premiered last summer. “Life after Beth,” starring Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, and Anna Kendrick, also tells the story of an undead girlfriend causing problems in her ex’s life.

Will “Burying the Ex” be a hilarious new addition to the genre or a stale packaging of a premise audiences have already seen? Fans will have to wait to find out. The film hits theaters on June 19.
