The “Fifty Shades of Grey” book series made its debut as erotic “Twilight” fan fiction, but according to the star of the upcoming movie adaptation, it’s nothing like the best-selling vampire love story. In a recent interview with Variety, actor Jamie Dornan, who will portray the sexually sadistic Christian Grey, says the movie, based on E.L. James’ book of the same name, is completely different from “Twilight.”

“… It’s not the same thing,” Dornan told Variety of the film, set to hit theaters Feb. 13. “We’re not the ‘Twilight’ franchise. We’re a different thing.”

But Dornan, 32, does have a friendship with the now-defunct franchise’s star, actor Robert Pattinson, 28. According to Dornan, he had a “few dinners” with the Edward Cullen actor since “Fifty Shades of Grey” wrapped filming last February. “I don’t remember what we talked about the last time I saw him. I think we just got drunk,” Dornan told Variety.

Despite Dornan starring in the predicted blockbuster, the actor said his “situation” is nothing like that of Pattinson, who quickly rose to fame following the release of the first “Twilight” film in 2008. “I’ve been around Rob long enough to see what it’s been like for him. I don’t know if it’s been a benefit to witness that. Whatever that is,” he said. “Whatever my situation is, it’s going to be different from Rob’s. They are incomparable."

While the actor, who also stars in the BBC drama “The Fall,” revealed that his private life with wife and actress Amelia Warner and their 1-year-old daughter has recently been sidelined by his work, he said he is not yet at Pattinson's level. "Fifty Shades" could definitely change that, though the Northern Ireland native says he has no interest in being a movie star.

“I’m astonished at how many people are telling me my life is going to change,” he said. “Everyone has been saying to me, ‘Are you ready?’ I don’t have a good answer to that, because I don’t know what I’m meant to be ready for. Whatever happens, happens. I’ll just roll with the punches.”

Dornan’s comments come on the heels of his co-star, actress Dakota Johnson’s interview about the “Fifty” film with Vogue magazine. In the spread, Johnson, 25, who will portray Dornan’s on-screen love interest, Anastasia Steele, said that the recognition ahead of the film's release has been daunting for her as well.

“It’s just the most insane thing to be a part of. I’ve never experienced anything like this; I don’t think anyone has. It’s terrifying and exciting," she said.
