If you have a peanut allergy, stay away from Hy-Vee chocolates.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday, certain lots of Hy-Vee chocolate products may contain an undeclared nut ingredient. As reported by the FDA, 120 cases of Hy-Vee Chocolate Caramel Clusters and 90 cases of Hy-Vee Chocolate-Covered Caramels could contain peanuts, a potentially deadly ingredient for consumers with nut allergies.

The recall, issued voluntarily by Iowa-based Palmer Candy Company, states that the potentially defective products were packaged under the Hy-Vee brand name and distributed to an unidentified number of the 235 Midwest Hy-Vee supermarkets Palmer supplies. According to the FDA statement, the recall was issued after the manufacturer discovered Hy-Vee Chocolate Caramel Clusters were mistakenly packaged with Hy-Vee Chocolate Covered Caramel labels, which do not list peanuts as one of the ingredients.

Hy-Vee Inc. confirmed the recall on its official Facebook page Monday, an action praised by customers of the supermarket chain. “Thank you for your diligence!” posted customer Rachel Upton Miller Monday, adding, “Those of us with severe peanut allergy appreciate it!”

The FDA claims no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. Those with peanut allergies are advised to immediately discontinue use of the listed items. “People who have an allergy to peanuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” stated the press release.

Consumers affected by the recall can receive a full refund by returning the recalled items to their original place of purchase. For more information, contact the Palmer Candy Company at (800) 831-0828.
