Christie Brinkley has explained why she stood up for her former boyfriend John Mellencamp after a tabloid report claimed that they broke up due to his “hellbent political opinions and redneck ways.”

"I just think that in today's world, with everything we see going on and all of that, it's really important to stress kindness," Brinkley told Entertainment Tonight at East Hampton Library's 12th Annual “Author's Night” over the weekend. “I think we start in our own homes and our own circles and if you see a friend that's not being treated fairly, you stick up for your friends.”

Shortly after a rep for the pair revealed to People last week that the two had gone their separate ways, Page Six published a story claiming that the pair’s opposing political beliefs was the reason of their breakup. Knowing what the truth is, the 62-year-old supermodel quickly took to Instagram to slam the report.

“While much has been written over the years about me that I simply allow to roll off my back... I do stand up for my friends when things seem unfair and this is the case here,” Brinkley wrote on Instagram, insisting that "distance and work” were all that stood in the way of their relationship.

Brinkley also noted that the “convoluted” report suggested that “John is against progressive Democratic politics and somehow sounds like a Trump fan." But that is definitely not the case, according to Brinkley.

“John and I are actually both patriotic Americans who do our fair share of working to bring Americans together. John, primarily through his work with Farm Aid and through his music,” Brinkley explained before revealing that they are both voting for Hillary Clinton for president.

“We both believe that we stand a better chance of overcoming the problems America faces when Americans of every race, religion ethnicity, gender, black lives, blue lives, come together in mutual respect and love, and that's why we are both voting for Hillary,” she added.

Despite her split from Mellencamp, it appears that Brinkley still has a good relationship with the 64-year-old “Hurts So Good” singer. When asked if there’s a possibility of her and Mellencamp getting back together in the future, she told Entertainment Tonight: “You never know. Good friendship is the basis for everything, right?”
