Cisco Systems Inc plans to invest or lend about $500 million in telecom operators and technology infrastructure in South Korea over the next five years, the country's presidential office said on Tuesday.

The presidential office also said in a statement that Cisco was expected to establish a global research center in South Korea and contribute to a city planning project, for a total investment expected to be higher than the $1.1 billion Cisco previously invested in its Indian research complex, without specifying a time frame.

Cisco declined to comment on the statement.
