One woman present at the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting has been hospitalized, but not for the reason some may think. Katie Medley escaped what has been called The Dark Knight Massacre and has just given birth to a baby boy, NBC News has reported.

Hugo Jackson Medley was born at 7:11 a.m. on Tuesday, the University of Colorado Hospital spokesman Dan Weaver said to NBC. Both mother and child are in good health.

He is loud and full of life! Just like his daddy! close friend Michael West said to ABC News.

However, her husband and Hugo's father, Caleb, is currently in a medically-induced coma in the same hospital after falling victim to James Holmes. Katie and Caleb Medley began dating during their senior year of high school in the town of Florence, Colo., West said to NBC.

You could just tell that out of everyone in the world, these two were meant for each other, West wrote on a website dedicated to his injured friend. The website is part of an effort to raise money to fun Caleb's medical bills, and as of Tuesday afternoon the website had more than 2,600 donors, amounting to $90,000.

According to Caleb's brother Seth, who had spoken with ABC, the new father is showing small signs of improvement.

There are indications that he understands us and can tell who we are, he said to ABC. His wife talks to him and he shutters. There are obvious signs he understands.

Even in his condition, Caleb's personality is evident in his small gestures and responses.

He is following commands, West said to ABC. He actually pinched one of the nurses who was helping him to turn over. Even in this state, he's still Caleb.

Both Katie and Caleb were huge Batman fans, and decided to treat themselves to a night at the movies before they needed a babysitter, NBC reports.

They had Batman apparel on, Katie Medley's father David Sanchez said to the news website. They waited for this movie for over a year.

They were having a normal opening night movie experience, West wrote when recounting a conversation with Katie. They stood anxiously in line, spent too much on popcorn and soda, suffered through the movie trailers and watched the beginning of the movie. That is when evil struck.

Caleb was shot in the face, according to NBC. The website that West created said that he lost his right eye, suffered brain damage and is in a medically-induced coma. Sanchez accompanied his daughter to the Arapahoe County courthouse on Monday to see the deranged' man responsible for nearly killing his son-in-law.

He's in critical but stable condition, so we're praying for him, Sanchez said when asked about Caleb. I think the main concern is him right now, and the baby being born.

At least 12 were left dead and 59 injured in the Colorado movie theater shooting on Friday, where James Holmes opened fire during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Holmes made his first appearance in court on Monday, and appeared to look dazed during the hearing.
