Philippines Former President Corazon Aquino who led the 1986 Philippines 'People Power' in peaceful way had passed away her son confirmed.

Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m. August 1, 2009 of cardio respiratory arrest, a statement from the Aquino family read.

Mrs. Aquino passed away at 3:18 a.m. August 1, 2009 (1918 GMT Friday) of cardio-respiratory arrest at the Makati Medical Center.

She was 76.

Mrs. Aquino known as Tita Cory translated as 'Auntie Cory' in English was confined to a Manila hospital for more than a month before she passed away.

Her son said the cancer had spread to other organs and she was too weak to continue her chemotherapy.

She would have wanted us to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and our country (Philippines), the family statement read.

The news sprung after Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had a meeting with US President Barrack Obama in the oval office of White house.

Arroyo expressed her condolences to the family of the former President.
