The deadly crash of Dan Wheldon, the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, is mourned by many and countless people have expressed their respect for him and sorrow over his loss on the Twittersphere.

After a fiery 15-car pileup on Sunday's race at the Las Vegas Indy 300, Wheldon died from unsurvivable injuries, according to IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard. This marked the first fatal crash in IndyCar since Paul Dana's death at Homestead in 2006.

This is an extreme sad day, Lewis Hamilton, British F1 ace, tweeted. Dan was a racer I'd followed throughout my career, as I often followed in his footsteps as we climbed the motorsport ladder in the UK.

He was an extremely talented driver. As a British guy, who not only went over to the States but who twice won the Indy 500, Hamilton continued.

This is a tragic loss at such a young age. My heart goes out to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time.

 

Just woken up to the most horrific news.. Dan Wheldon RIP... said Jenson Button, who also could not keep his mourning for Wheldon within 140 characters.

I have so many good memories of racing with Dan in the early 90's, a true fighter. We've lost a legend in our sport but also a great guy... Button recalled the 33-year-old racer's successful career.   

I can't begin to imagine what his family are going through and my thoughts are with them at this very difficult time..
