The “Plants vs. Zombies” franchise wasn’t just a surprise seller as a video game franchise, but also as comic books. With various comics and graphic novels based on the franchise doing surprisingly well, publisher Dark Horse Comics has announced a “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare” comic, a prequel series to the upcoming “Garden Warfare 2” game.
Plans for the series were revealed by writer Paul Tobin and artist Jacob Chabot on Bleeding Cool. The comic will debut Oct. 28 to help hype the sequel, and Dark Horse Comics plans to showcase the series at San Diego Comic-Con, July 9 to 12. So it's clear that Dark Horse knows how important the series is.
Tobin has been working on “Plants vs. Zombies” comics since their inception, writing the first graphic novel “Plants vs. Zombies: Lawnmageddon,” which become the start of the comic series. Installments after “Lawnmageddon” retained characters such as Crazy Dave, his niece Patrice and a young adventurer named Nate Timely.
Most recently, the first issue of the “Plants vs. Zombies: Bully for You” mini-series received an 8.8 grade out of 10 from IGN. “Bully for You” continues to be written by Tobin, though the artist for this particular series is Ron Chan, with two backup stories done by fan-favorite artist Dustin Nguyen, who is mostly known for his "Batman" work in DC Comics.
“Garden Warfare” was a game-changer for the “Plants vs. Zombies” series, as it combined some of the strategy elements of the original game with third-person shooting and a 3-D environment. The series proved to be popular, resulting in a sequel and the “Garden Warfare” comic.
The “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare” comic will be available in local comic stores. “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2” will arrive in spring 2016 for Microsoft’s Xbox One, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and the Windows PC.
