Days of Our Lives
Eric (Greg Vaughan) struggles with his feelings for Nicole (Arianne Zucker) on the Aug. 23, 2017 episode of "Days of Our Lives."  NBC

He finally got her to forgive him for causing Daniel's death, but now, Eric is once again struggling when it comes to the romantic feelings he has for Nicole. On the Wednesday, Aug. 23 episode of "Days of Our Lives," he will continue to run into problems as he tries to keep his feelings completely in check.

Eric (Greg Vaughan) and Nicole (Arianne Zucker) were once engaged, but after she tried to keep him from returning to the priesthood, they eventually split up and she moved on with Daniel. She found love with him and was even set to marry him, but after he wound up losing Serena, Eric turned to alcohol on the NBC soap. His drinking reached a culmination on New Year's Eve, when he drove drunk and got into a car accident with Daniel, which cost his friend his life. He spent time in prison for the crime and has since returned to town to try and right his wrongs and make a difference in people's lives.

Following Daniel's death, Nicole eventually moved on with Deimos (Vincent Irizarry), but when that relationship cost her custody of her daughter, Holly, whom was born through surrogate Chloe (Nadia Bjorlin), she ended the relationship and went on the run with Brady (Eric Martsolf). The two have since struck up their own relationship, and Nicole is doing everything she can to prove to a judge that she can take care of her daughter, who is currently in the foster care system. While working with Eric at the Horton Center, she found his letters to her from when he was in prison, and eventually forgave him for what happened. However, her forgiveness has tortured Eric, who hasn't really stopped loving her, and knows he can't do anything about it because she is with his brother.

He will be further tested as he tries to keep the truth from her about how he feels when she arrives back to work again and something is clearly weighing on her mind. He will want to console her, but will know he can't, for the risk of Brady finding out and assuming the worst is something he doesn't want to put on Nicole again.

However, Nicole will be in a major state of panic, because after she and Brady talked it out over his assumptions she was having an affair with Eric, he revealed that he knew Eric was the one who had murdered Deimos on the night of the Marton House party. After seeing the amulet he found in Eric's room, Nicole suddenly had clear memories of that night—and it quickly became clear to her that Eric wasn't the one who committed the crime.

Nicole has fully remembered every detail of that night now, and knows she ran into Deimos, who taunted her about her not having Holly, and then cursed her to a life without children. Overcome with grief and rage, Nicole grabbed a knife and stabbed him. Now that she remembers this, she's torn over what to do. Though she knows turning herself in is the right thing, it will mean she truly never will get to see Holly again, because she'll never have custody of her daughter if she admits to committing such a horrific crime. With all this weighing on her, Nicole will truly not be the same again.

"Days of Our Lives" airs weekdays on NBC.
