Democrat Janice Hahn defeated Republican Craig Huey Tuesday in a congressional election for the California House seat, according to unofficial results showing Hahn's votes of 54.6% to 45.4%.

Hahn began receive congratulatory messages that poured in even before the ballots were tallied, as she had maintained the lead from the beginning on election day.

The Los Angeles City Councilwoman had the support of President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton, who made automated calls to voters. Clinton also helped Hahn raise money.

Hahn had campaigned for preserving Social Security, bringing home troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, and investing in green technology and jobs instead of wars.
