Now that’s what you call a Christmas miracle! Prior to the airing of the anticipated “Doctor Who” Christmas Special on Thursday, Dec. 25, it was teased that a major character’s fate would be revealed in the festive episode. However, instead of viewers having to say a sorrowful goodbye to Jenna Coleman’s character during the Season 8 installment of the hit British series, they were instead gifted with Clara Oswald sticking around for yet another season of “Doctor Who.”
In the Christmas episode, which was essentially the British version of “Inception,” the Doctor enters multiple layers of dreams to save Clara from space crabs. Space crabs are parasites that put their victims into a dream-like state so they are able to suck their victims dry without a hassle. But ultimately the Doctor (and Santa) were both able to rescue Clara from meeting her grim fate – and being killed off from the series!
“It’s wonderful,” Coleman, who joined the cast in 2012, said following the holiday special. “I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn’t walk away with the story being unresolved. There is so much more to do. I think they’ve finally just reached a point where they really understand each other.”
Peter Capaldi, who portrays the Twelfth Doctor in the long running series, then chimed in with his thoughts of his TV companion staying on for yet another season. “I’m thrilled,” he gushed. “Jenna has just been fantastic and such a pleasure to work with.”
Before the 2014 Christmas Special premiered, Coleman’s involvement in the upcoming series was left dangling in the air after the actress expressed uncertainty over her future participation in the series, the New York Daily News reported. The speculation of Coleman’s possible exit from the series grew stronger when it was rumored that former “Veep” director Chris Addison would be replacing Clara as the doctor’s sidekick in the upcoming installment.
When asked to comment on the alleged show-shifting exit of Clara, a representative from the BBC told RadioTimes that they wouldn't comment due to the rumors being mere speculation. They then added that if viewers wanted answers that they would have to tune in to the Christmas episode if they wanted to find out Clara’s fate!
