Doctor Who Christmas special
The “Doctor Who” 2016 holiday special airs on Christmas Day. BBC America

“Doctor Who” is coming back! Whovians know that every year, the TARDIS makes a stop on Christmas night. This year is no different, despite the show not airing any other new episodes in 2016. The Christmas special will show what adventures the Doctor has been up to since viewers last saw him, and luckily, even American viewers don’t have to wait long for the new installment.

The “Doctor Who” 2016 Christmas special airs Sunday, Dec. 25 at 9 p.m. EST on BBC America. U.S. viewers will be happy to know that the U.K. fans will only see the episode a few hours earlier. The special, titled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” will be 90-minutes long.

Of course, those who would rather see it on the big screen can watch in movie theaters. Fathom Events has teamed up with BBC America again this year to show “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” in theaters. It will be shown on Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Thursday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. local time in several cities. Check out Fathom Events for a full list of locations and to buy tickets.

Those who prefer streaming can watch the show online, but they’ll also have to wait. The “Doctor Who” Christmas episode won’t be available on AMC.com until Monday, Dec. 26.

Whovians have already waited quite a while. They last caught up with the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) in the 2015 Christmas special, where he had his final encounter with his wife, River Song (Alex Kingston). In that adventure, he met a man named Nardole (Matt Lucas), and the Doctor apparently took a liking to the funny guy. He’ll be in this Christmas special and remain with the Doctor through several episodes of Season 10.

The “Doctor Who” holiday episode will show the Doctor in New York. There are apparently some brain-swapping aliens trying to attack Manhattan, so the Doctor and Nardole join forces with an investigative reporter and a superhero known as the Ghost. The hero, who also goes by Grant (Justin Chatwin), is inspired by showrunner Steven Moffat’s love for superheroes.

“I’ve always loved superheroes and this Christmas, Doctor Who dives into that world. My favorite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent,” Moffat said in a press release.

The new episode will co-star Adetomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman, but Pearl Mackie, who will play Bill, is not going to be in the episode. As previously reported, the Doctor’s next companion will not be introduced until “Doctor Who” Season 10 kicks off in 2017.
