“Downton Abbey” Season 6 is almost over. The PBS period drama’s series finale is also the Christmas special, and a new promo video makes it look like the ending will definitely be a tear-jerker. Not only are viewers saying goodbye to the show, but characters appear to be saying goodbye to each other as well.

The video makes it clear that Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) is leaving his job at Downton. Everyone seems sad to see the scheming under-butler leave. Even George (Oliver/Zac Barker) asks him not to go. “I arrived as a boy. I leave as a man,” Barrow says.

The Christmas episode will also focus on New Year’s Eve. It seems even the characters who have been the most reluctant to keep up with changes are starting to accept that they are living in a more modern time. “The world is a different place from the way it was, my lord,” Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) tells Robert (Hugh Bonneville). “And Downton Abbey must change with it.”

The Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) tells Isobel (Penelope Wilton) about why she loves New Year’s, and it sounds like even she is looking forward to the coming changes. “Makes me smile,” Violet says. “Every year, we drink to the future, whatever it may bring.”

The promo also features a brief look at characters who will return in Season 6, despite leaving last year. Tom Branson (Allen Leech) is featured in a couple of scenes while Lady Rose (Lily James) is seen kissing her husband toward the end of the video. While Branson will return before the finale episode, Rose will only appear in the holiday special.

Though British viewers are currently preparing themselves to watch the series finale Dec. 25, American fans are still waiting for Season 6 to start. The final season premieres Jan. 3, 2016, so PBS won’t air the Christmas episode until March.
