Incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., is leading Rep. Joe Kennedy III, D-Mass., in Massachusetts’ Democratic Senate primary race. As of 10:05 p.m. ET, Markey has 54.8% of the votes to Kennedy’s 45.2%, according to the Associated Press.

Markey, 74, has promoted a progressive platform, supporting stances such as the Green New Deal and Medicare For All. He has been endorsed by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

Markey served in the House for 37 years, before being elected to the Senate in 2013.

Kennedy, 39, is the grandson of former New York Senator and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. Kennedy claims Markey has not done enough for Massachusetts and criticized the incumbent for his vote in favor of the Iraq War.

Kennedy has been endorsed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Markey was originally expected to lose his seat to Kennedy, but he has managed to revamp his image. His progressive stances, Nike sneakers and strong support on social media have made him an icon for young activists.

If Kennedy loses the race, he will be the first member of the Kennedy family to lose an electoral race in Massachusetts.
