Egypt witnessed one of the bloodiest episodes of soccer violence in history on Wednesday evening.

At least 75 people were killed and scores of others grievously injured when fans went berserk at a stadium in Port Said following the home team's surprise win over one of the country's most popular clubs. The death toll is likely to rise further.

Al-Masry, the home club based in Port Said, clashed with Cairo-based Al-Ahly in an Egyptian league fixture. As al-Masry won 3-1, fans invaded the pitch leading to massive violence, stampede and arson. Law enforcing agencies failed to intervene and control the violence.
