Cookie Empire
Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) in a scene from "Empire" Season 1, episode 9. Fox

After we caught our breath from last week’s “Empire” episode, Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) was recovering from the aftermath of telling his family his ALS diagnosis by seeking solace in bed with his ex-wife, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson). An incensed Ankia (Grace Gealy) was out for revenge after catching fiancée Lucious’ infidelity in the act, while his older son, Andre (Trai Byers), attempted to get control of Empire Records.

The youngest Lyon in the pride, Hakeem (Bryshere Gray), was making amends with mom Cookie when he tried introducing his older girlfriend, fashion designer Camilla Marks (Naomi Cambell) to her. The good news was that it wasn’t the biggest reveal at Lucious’ party. That honor belongs to middle son Jamal (Jussie Smollett), who remixed his homophobic father’s song into a coming out anthem, finally coming out publically. Cookie was thrilled, Lucious less so.

In episode 9, “Unto the Breach,” the Lyon pack will circle the wagons to protect the Empire under siege. Ankia’s deception is uncovered by Cookie who declares total war, leaving Lucious with the decision of what do to about his strained relationship with Anika. On top of that, Lucious must then confront the man Anika sold him out to: his competitor Billy Beretti (Judd Nelson).

Hakeem and Jamal are still on their dad’s side and do their part to protect Empire Entertainment. Jamal pursues a duet with the famous singer Delphine (Estelle), while Hakeem continues patching up his relationship with Cookie. Older brother Andre looks to be taking a further step back from the throne after his fall from grace, but if he survives episode 9, perhaps a comeback may be in store.

Guest stars include the return of Judd Nelson (“The Breakfast Club”) as Lucious’ arch nemesis Billy Beretti, singer Estelle playing the part of artist Delphine and Serayah reprises her role as Tiana Brown, Hakeem’s brief collaborator from earlier in Season 1.

Episode 9 of "Empire" Season 1, “Unto the Breach,” airs on FOX on Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST. Watch the sneak peek video below:
